Refrigerator, Freezer, and Walk-in Cooler Deployment

Place the Hub close to refrigeration equipment, prefer probe-based Sensors, and expect shorter battery life in cold environments.

Can I use the MOCREO Sensor in my refrigerator, freezer, or walk-in cooler?

Of course!

  • Many people and businesses use MOCREO Sensor to monitor their refrigerators or freezers, and even commercial walk-in coolers.

However, there are a few important things to keep in mind:

  • Due to the signal having to pass through the walls surrounding the device, the signal strength/range will be reduced. This is typically a manageable issue as long as you are familiar with the deployment environment. In a typical refrigerator or freezer, you can still receive a good signal within the same room or nearby rooms, but the range will not be as far if the sensor is not inside. Pay special attention when placing the Hub, as it should be placed relatively close to the refrigeration device. If you need to place it further away, you may need to experiment to ensure a reliable connection.

  • Another important thing to keep in mind is the signal strength,especially for food refrigeration equipment: metal objects are a very effective absorber of Zigbee signals. Because all refrigeration units contain a large amount of metal, if you are going to be using our sensors in a refrigerator, freezer, or walk-in cooler scenario, use the ST4/ST5 sensor with a temperature probe.

For a deployment checklist, open the ST4 or ST5 guide and place the Hub close to the refrigeration equipment before testing the Sensor.

  • Do not place an ST3/ST6 Sensor inside a refrigerator or freezer. Their casing has ventilation holes for the humidity element; in a cold, humid space frost builds up on the casing and can damage the hardware. If humidity monitoring is not required, use an ST5 instead: keep the Sensor body outside the appliance and route its external temperature probe to the spot you want to monitor. This keeps readings accurate and the wireless link stable.

  • For ultra-low temperatures use the ST10. It is a BLE temperature Sensor rated down to -328°F (-200°C), see Measurement Range and Accuracy.

  • Secondly, battery efficiency is lower at low temperatures, so the battery life will be shortened. In a refrigerator, this effect is relatively small, but in very cold freezers, you may need to change the battery more frequently, for example, every 6-12 months rather than the typical 2 years or more intervals.
